Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) in Theatre

Students seeking the Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) degree in Theatre (Acting and Directing) are required to audition for all departmental mainstage productions.

Elective courses, whether inside or outside the department, must be selected in consultation with the major adviser.

In order to be admitted to the B.F.A. program, a student must have completed THEA 120, 213, 250, 270, demonstrated an aptitude for the chosen area of study (acting/directing, design/technology, musical theatre), and maintain at least a 3.0 GPA in all theatre courses.

Upon completion of the sophomore year (or for transfer students, after one semester at UM), all students wishing to enter the B.F.A. Theatre program must schedule a screening examination with Theatre faculty, who will evaluate students individually and recommend appropriate programs of study.

A senior project (THEA 465) is required of every candidate for the B.F.A. Theatre degree. The project may be in acting, directing, or design, or it may consist of a research paper or creative work, to be presented publicly or as approved by the faculty. The senior project must be proposed, approved, and scheduled the year before it is to be presented. Deadlines for submission, approval, and scheduling are determined by the faculty (usually in November of the junior year) and posted on the department call-board. If a proposal is submitted late, the grade on the student’s senior project will be lowered by one letter grade, and by an additional letter grade for each month following, until the proposal is submitted. A student who does not submit a proposal has the option to not graduate or to complete a project assigned by the faculty of the department.

All Theatre majors must maintain a GPA of 2.0 or better to participate in a production that is not a class assignment.
